TFA is looking for science innovators&inspiring young people in government

For the third year in a row, The Future Awards, referred to by the World Bank as ‘The Nobel Prize for Young Africans’, is searching for the most brilliant young minds in Science, in addition to its yearly search for the brightest minds in Technology.

“For many years, what we have done is try to mirror the breakthroughs that young people have made in different fields and to sustain them,” said Chude Jideonwo, who is Executive Director of The Future Project. “In keeping with our ‘Tear down these walls!’ campaign this year, we are looking for the brightest young minds driving innovation and impact in science and/or technology with innovation or invention – through the category Innovator of the Year – Science and Technology.

The awards website explains the broad criteria for this category: We are searching for young people across science and technology (especially Information Technology) who have furthered the boundaries in these fields in terms of research or activity. There are a critical number of young Nigerians who are advancing impressive, practical innovations that can compare with the best around the world. It will help if there is some kind of recognition or institutional buy-in for that work, and the work should be available for inspection.

“We are also beaming the search light on service,” Jideonwo said in explaining the Excellence in Service categories. “We are looking for young people in governance and the corporate sector whose work shines bright in driving effective, professionalism and impact, with integrity and productivity.”
It will be recalled that, in 2010, Ify Aniebo won the Best Use of Science (also the biggest prize, Young Person of the Year) award for her ground-breaking work in malaria research, and in 2011, Debo Olaosebikan won the award for his work on developing the world’s first electrically operated Silicon Laser, a project supported by a $6 million grant from the United States Department of Defense. In the same year, Tolulope Iroye won the Best Use of Technology award for the ‘Magic box’; a device built to allow you control your electronic gadgets, for example, your TV from anywhere with your mobile phone as well as control electricity or mobilise/immobilise cars from anywhere in the world.

Town Hall Meetings have been holding across the country, including in Lagos, Rivers, Anambra, Adamawa and Abuja. Nominees must be Nigerian citizens and must be aged 18 – 31. Police accuse Gov Oshiomhole of lying about assasination attempt

The police command in Edo State yesterday debunked allegations by Governor Adams Oshiomhole's camp that his convoy was attacked by suspected assassins on Thursday June 28th.

The Edo State Commissioner for Information had claimed that the governor's motorcade was shot at during his campaign rally on Thursday and accused Edo State PDP of being behind the attack.

Now the police is saying the Governor was ambushed by protesting students and not assassins. Their statement after the cut...
Press statement from Edo State Police Command signed by its spokesperson, Anthony Airhuoyo
On Thursday, the governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, went on a campaign tour to Usen Town in Ovia South West Area of Edo State. The governor, while on his way to the campaign venue, met the students of the Institute of Technology and Management, Usen, and promised to address them on his way back.
After the campaign, at about 6.15pm, the governor decided to address them on a later date as it was already getting late. But the students barricaded the highway at the outskirts of the town and compelled the comrade governor to visit their institution."
According to the police, no one was killed in the clash.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole survives assasination attempt

Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Louis Odion, told newsmen that Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State survived an assassination attempt yesterday June 28th when gunmen attacked his convoye while he was campaigning at Usen town, Ovia South West LGA of the state.

Mr Odion explained:
"At about 6pm local time, Governor Oshiomhole’s convoy left the palace; it had not travelled too far down the road when it ran into a barricade. Naturally, the security details attached to the governor came down to remove the bar. As they were clearing the place, tens of heavily armed thugs emerged from nowhere and opened fire on the governor for several seconds.

Dutifully, the brave security details attached to the governor, supported by an additional contingent of regular policemen deployed to maintain law and order, rose to the occasion. They were able to shield the governor, key government functionaries and others, including leaders of Edo ACN to safety without sustaining any human casualties. But several official vehicles, including Toyota Landcruisers, Hilux pick-up van and Toyota Corolla saloon car were either badly damaged or riddled with bullets.

"The Edo State Government wishes to condemn this latest assault on Governor Oshiomhole in strongest terms and urge the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to call their members in Edo State to order. The misguided elements in the rank in Edo State should realise that not only they have the monopoly of violence.

But for the uncommon restraint displayed by the Governor’s team in the face of sheer provocation, there could have been heavy casualty toll. The state government wishes to enjoin the good people of Edo to remain calm and be law-abiding, so as not to play into the hands of those bent on plunging the state into anarchy to escape imminent defeat at the polls."

The fraud case against Jim Iyke was not thrown out of court - Habiba's camp claim

Dear Marbotek,

Our notice has been drawn to an article published on your blog and other media and we have been mandated to put the facts straight.

We would like to say categorically that the accused (Mr. Jim Iyke) confessed to all the charges that were brought against him which said charges includes criminal breach of trust, assault, criminal force, cheating, criminal misappropriation and obtaining by tricks etc.

Pursuant to his confession and guilty plea, the accused ( Mr. Jim Iyke) would have been sent to jail but for the magnanimity of the victim, Mrs Abubakar who, after listening to all the pleading from Jim's family that he was their bread winner, decided to temper justice with mercy.

As it was not the interest of the victim to ruin his career nor cause his family unnecessary pain, the moral decision was taking to withdraw the case on the condition that he will refund all the money he fraudulently obtained.

At the instance of our client, the case was only discharged for amicable settlement (and not thrown out) and the accused was not in any way acquitted.

We expect that Mr. Jim Iyke will concentrate on finding ways of fulfilling the debt repayment agreement signed by him rather than the unnecessary show of braggadocio and deliberate misinformation, as the agreement clearly states that should he default on two consecutive installment payments, the case will be re-opened, all waivers suspended, and the law will take its cause.

He remains liable and must desist from bringing the court, the law enforcement officers and all parties involved to disrepute or the full wrath of the law will be brought upon him.

Please find attached evidence and documentation in respect of the above.

Thank you for setting the records straight.
